Narrative Essay on a Life Changing Moment
In our life, many events influence the way we act or the decisions that we make. Basically, you go through certain events that have such a big impact that they totally change your life.
For me, the life-changing moment was exactly when I enrolled in college a few years ago. Since that occurred, January has always been a special month for me because this is the month that makes me remember the event. Besides, this cold month makes me recall how this event totally changed my life and look at my life from a very different perspective.
As I was joining my first year in college, I naturally took note of newfound freedom. I wanted to use this freedom to experience some of the things that I had been curious about but could not engage in because I did not feel free enough. What I did not know was that the whole experience of joining college and getting orientated to college life would totally change my life. First of all, I had to move to another place other than the one where my parents had raised me. For others in my dormitory, the process of integrating into dormitory life and feeling like home in their rooms appeared to come naturally but it was not that easy for me. The whole process was highly emotional for me because I had the feeling that being so comfortable in the room would be like betraying my parents who had always taught me that our home was the most important place to cherish. The feeling that my parents were not a stone’s throw away also made me feel anxious, as I began to feel the strain of being so far away from my parents. Overall, however, the process taught me an important lesson of the importance of moving away and establishing my own life separate from my parents.
The other issue associated with joining my first year in college that was life-changing as well is the part where I had to make new friends. When I arrived at college, I had no friends at all. Making friends at home had always been an easy task, given that our home was located in a gated community and my parents often visited the neighbors. As they did so, they would introduce me to the neighbors’ children. As a result, I had a very good platform to make friends. To make things even better, most of the children in our neighborhood went to the school where I was enrolled and as such, when I joined the school, I had some sort of a soft landing with regard to making friends. In college, however, I had to make friends from scratch and it was a really humbling and insightful moment.
Today, I realize that the phase of my life was one of the most significant. However, what I am grateful for is that I have loads of sweet memories and experience that helps me deal with interpersonal issues in my everyday life.
Some tips on writing a narrative essay on a life-changing moment:
What is a narrative essay? The definition of one may vary from school to school. Usually, this type of paper describes a text that tells a story and gives you a chance to share your personal story in a captivating and inspirational way. What makes a narrative essay special is that it hooks more readers because everyone likes stories. That is why you have to structure your paper well, develop a compelling story, and edit your piece to get the highest grades.
In this type of essay, you should remember that while reading your essay, the audience should be able to paint a vivid picture in their minds. In addition to that, if you are narrating about an event at some point in your life, make sure you are not describing your everyday routine.
Consider the topic. Get readers’ attention by choosing an event that enables you to build up a climax. Regardless of what you choose to write about, you should be able to incorporate your truth into a story that matters. If you don’t happen to be involved in your story and don’t share your personal experience, your narrative essay will end up a failure.
Describe all the events of the story in chronological order. In general, narrative essays are presented chronologically. It enables the author to avoid any confusion, while the readers find it easier to follow the thoughts of the author.
Decide on your protagonist and antagonist and describe each. Also, take your time to define who else is equally important in your story and who exactly affected the outcome of it. Can you remember all the particular and specific details about the people? Make sure to use them to build the characters into real people.
Don’t forget to add some spice to your narration. Dilute your text with a little detail that will turn everything upside-down. It may be some antagonist exerting every effort to ruin your plans, an unpredictable twist, or a funny coincidence that will definitely break your readers out laughing.
