Mass Media Essay

This is an example essay on Mass Media:
The mass media is an influential tool in communicating information about what goes on around the world. Through television, magazines, radio, and other communicative resources, Americans expose themselves to news all around them. It brings into light the amount of power the mass media has and its ability to manipulate the minds of Americans into forming public opinions on certain issues. I intend to discuss the sources of media power, whether the mass media has too much power, and end with a discussion on whether the mass media has influenced my public opinions in any way. (more…)

Essay on Gender Roles

Gender roles are learned mainly through social interaction instead of biologically. When we are born we have very little concept of our gender and we learn “proper” behavior through society and our relationships with others. Our gender identity is constructed through interaction with the media, our parents, and our peers at school, at work and at home. How we are raised in society reflects how we act as we grow older. Our society changes our attitudes and views on life more than our biological make-up.

According to Ana Veciana-Suarez, author of “Thank Heaven for Little Boys,” many traits of boys and girls are instinctive and we are born with them. The genetics we are born with may affect our physical abilities, but children learn to act in certain ways by watching people in society. For example, when young boys watch cartoons or certain male-orientated TV programs, they are influenced to act like the characters they see on TV. (more…)

Essay on Divorce

Studies have found that children who are in elementary school at the time of their parents’ divorce experience more problems dealing with the divorce than children who are pre-school age (Frost & Pakiz, 1990). During the elementary school years, children have a general idea of what divorce is, and some of the changes that will take place in their family. At this age, they also feel especially vulnerable because of the dependency they have on their parents (Brubeck & Beer, 1992). The children experience the loss of the relationship between themselves and the now non-residential parent. They also see the absence of the mutual support and respect that their parents once shared.

Social Security Essay

Social Security Essay example:
Social Security is a continuing issue of the United States government since the founding of it thirty-eight years ago. Initially, Social Security was created to guarantee health benefits to the elderly, disabled, and poor. Though lately, President Bush has been pushing for private health plans and less on government. President Bush proposed a $2.23 trillion budget plan for 2004 including deep tax cuts, an expansion of Medicare, strengthening security at home and abroad, and setting aside $400 million for Medicaid while adding prescription drug coverage and giving states more leeway for spending federal funds. Bush also proposed a new plan increasing Social Security funds to an $8.53 billion budget for the Social Security Administration.

Clashing views concerning Bush’s 2004 budget plan and Social Security exist among Republicans and Democrats. Initially, the majority of Republicans backed Bush’s plans arguing that balancing the budget isn’t a top priority right now and calling the plan “a commonsense budget.” The Commissioner of Social Security is excited about the increase of Social Security funds and believes it is due to the “hard work and dedication” of their employees. On the other end of the spectrum, Democrats argue the budget plan will deepen government debt while shoring up Social Security and Medicare for the baby boom generation in a time when we have no surpluses.
