Communism Essay

This is a free sample essay on Communism:
Communism is a theory which advocates a state of society in which there should be no private ownership, all property being vested in the community and labor organized for the common benefit of all members; the professed principle being that each should work according to his capacity, and receive according to his wants. This means no one owns property and they all work toward the common goal of the state. With communism everyone should be equal; there should be no division of classes.

That would lead one to believe that a communist government doesn’t allow anyone the freedom of speech. Although it is true that in the past and currently a communist society has infringed on their citizens’ rights, the association between communism and the restriction of free speech is disillusioned. This leaves Americans with a false sense of freedom. They seem to believe that freedom is the right to wave tiny flags and the right to bear arms. Most Americans truly believe that under communism they will be unable to enjoy the freedoms they currently have, however many of these people give little or no thought to what freedom really is only that it is good and under communism they would not have it, therefore it is bad. Objective Essay on the Puritans

This is a free sample essay on the Puritans:
Throughout the writings on the Puritans there seem to be many different interpretations of who they were and how true they were to their religious beliefs. In the selection “Were the Puritans “Puritanical”?” it is interesting to see how Puritan beliefs are extremely two sided. For instance the article talks about how many believe that god created things for necessary use only but it states if that is so then why would there be a pleasurable aspect to things. There is an example that states, “The wine is from God but the Drunkard is from the Evil” (Degler, 101). which shows that in one sense the Puritans do believe that pleasure is allowed in life, one should enjoy wine without it being considered a sin.

What is not acceptable in the Puritan religion is excess, one is entitled to drink the wine from god but they must not abuse the privilege by drinking more than their share that is when they will be considered sinful. Another example is their beliefs about the manners of dance that were acceptable. One could dance so long as they were not dancing with the opposite sex in a sexual manner. The dress code of the Puritans was determined by ones status and they believed that the people should dress appropriately. Then there is the issue of leisure involving music and art. Basically what this article says is that the Puritans were not a people opposed to having enjoyment in life but they did believe that it had to be done at appropriate times in appropriate ways. There are myths that they did not like music which is not the case at all they just did not believe that church was the right place to enjoy music. It also talks about art and states that there has been evidence of nudity in their art. I find all this to be interesting because most information that is written on the Puritans makes them out to be very strict and religious people who live their life “trying to develop a strong relationship with god through Bible study, prayer, and introspection” as stated in (The American Promise, 80). Analytical Biography of Andrew Jackson Essay

Andrew Jackson was born on March 15th, 1767 at a settlement near the Crawford’s Branch of Waxhaw Creek in South Carolina (1). His parents, Andrew Jackson, and Elizabeth Hutchinson immigrated to America two years prior to his birth, in 1765 (1). Unfortunately, his father died only a few days prior to Andrew’s birth. Jackson lived a long and interesting life, full of many achievements, financial, military and political to die at an old age of 78 in 1845. At only 13, Jackson, along with his brother joined a regiment to serve as a mounted courier in the American Revolution (2). His hotheadedness showed at even this early age, when after being captured by the British he was nearly killed by an officers sword for refusing to polish his boots (1). Jackson’s mother managed to get both him and his brother out of captivity, but they had both came down with smallpox while being held and his brother died on the trip home (1). Her drive for going farther and farther into the record books, set her apart from the typical woman of the early 20th century. By the time she was in her 30’s, she had already flown across the Atlantic ocean, breaking the stereotype of a common woman across the universe. Amelia’s spirit and love for her calling resulted in her mark in today’s history books, and her ever enchanting story of adventure across the skies of the cosmos.

Amelia Mary Earhart was born on July 24, 1897 on her grandparents’ farm in Atchison Kansas. She was the oldest of two girls born to Amy and Edwin Earhart. She and her sister Muriel were given a life of great wealth and prosperity by attending elite private schools and supplied with many gifts by their wealthy grandparents. Edwin and Amy moved to Des Moines Iowa in 1905 to start a life for their own in the railroad business, and left the girls on the farm until 1908. Edwin was promoted in 1909, and greatly improved the financial situation of the Earhart family, but at this time, Edwin also became a heavy drinker. (more…)

Prohibition Essay

Alcohol and controversy are two words that seem to go hand in hand. The very nature of alcohol, to alter one’s abilities and control allows for a distinct division in the opinion of the people. Just as the people are divided, the law follows a similar path. The legal position of alcohol has undergone many changes throughout time. Whether social, legal or political, problems follow close at hand. Canada’s memorable experience with the Temperance and the Prohibition movements allow for a closer examination of the “Devil’s Drink”.

Canada’s expansive land coupled with the variety of population allowed for a challenging and controversial experience during the Prohibition. Political policy clashed with public opinion and caused social uproar. Examination of those who supported the Prohibition, those who vehemently opposed and those who took a middle stand allow one to better understand Canada’s history through controversial times. While the Prohibition was a fascinating time, it is also a perfect example of Canada’s population division and how the issue of alcohol turned the country upside down.

The most zealous of these divisive sides were the temperance organizations and the Protestant Church. The temperance movement grew out of the Protestant fundamentalist and evangelical church, when the early Methodists first established temperance movements and took the vow of temperance. Beginning in the 1830s, Canadian churches such as the Presbyterian and Baptist joined the temperance movement along side Methodists. Their common ideology evolved into self-restraint from alcohol in all forms, and a fight against those who opposed Prohibition. (more…)

The Fall of Rome Essay

The main reason for the fall of the Roman Empire is civil war. After Marcus Aurelius died Rome was plagued with civil wars. The civil wars can be linked to all four of the systems. The civil wars can be linked to the political system because it helped to cause the division of the empire. Citizens stopped obeying soldiers because they were cruel. The civil wars can also be linked to the social and military systems. They are linked in the same way because civil wars caused many of the citizens to become disloyal and lose patriotism. It also affected the Roman economy, and it’s military in another way. The Roman’s had to spend a lot of money on the civil wars. So it didn’t have enough money to hire mercenaries and fund the military. The civil wars also weakened the Rome’s defenses. This is why the civil wars helped cause the fall of the Roman Empire. Enlightenment Essay

During the late 17th to 18th century there was a period known as the Enlightenment where there were many new controversial philosophical ideas on the government and politics. Some of the ideas that have come up are standard in our government and political practice in the present.

One of the great philosophers of the enlightenment period was Adam Smith and he wrote the great book of The Wealth Of Nations. Adam had ideas involving the econmony, which was that the economy was a self-correcting mechanism, which did not need to be regulated by the government. He wanted a capitalist system where business owners freely managed their own companies and workers could freely choose their pursuits. Adam had said that humans work better when they are striving for personal profits than when they are aiming for the public. (more…)

Lenin Essay

It is erroneous to entitle Vladimir Lenin a Marxist. In his What Is to Be Done?, and The State and Revolution, Lenin discusses many Marxist categories, including the development of proletarian consciousness, the determined path of History and the inevitability of communism, and the relationship between socialism and internationalism. Vladimir Lenin’s insurgent writings represent a significant departure from the speculative writings of Karl Marx. In my essay I will show that Lenin should not legitimately describe himself as a Marxist, and that Leninism as a political philosophy is distinct from Marxism. In my essay, by differentiating Marxist and Leninist, I hope to clear up the common intellectual confusion that arises when applying such terms to a theorist and revolutionary like Lenin. (more…)

John Adams, the first vice president under George Washington and the second President of the United States, accompanied the growing country through some of its most serious tribulations. He became the first President to live in the White House, and was also the first chief executive whose son also served as president. Adams played a major role in the adoption and in the signing of the historic document, The Declaration of Independence. Adams barely earned popularity during his long political career. He was not a cold-hearted man, but his bluntness, impatience, and vanity made him more enemies than friends. Also, his clumsiness in human relations often caused him to be misunderstood.

John Adams was born in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts, on October 30, 1735. His father, also John Adams, was a farmer, a deacon, and a militia officer. His mother, Susanna Boylston Adams, came from a prestige family of Brookline and Boston merchants and physicians. When Adams was young he helped with the chores on the farm, and studied hard in the village school. He didn’t like to read books in particular.

Adams graduated from Harvard College in 1755. He was ranked number fourteen in a class of twenty-four, based on social position, not intelligence. Adams was actually one of the best scholars in his class. After teaching schooling for a short period, Adams studied law with James Putnam in Worcester, Massachusetts. He moved to Boston ten years later, where he became a leading attorney of the Massachusetts colony.

In 1764, Adams married Abigail Smith (1744-1818), a minister’s daughter, in Weymouth, Massachusetts. John Quincy Adams, their oldest son, became the sixth President of the United States the year before his father died. (more…)
