Affluenza Essay

The film “Affluenza” has a direct connection to the health of the environment / natural ecosystem by revealing the forces which have dramatically transformed he United states from a nation that believed in plain living and high thinking into the ultimate consumer society. We have more stuff, less time and our quality of life seems to be deteriorating. This film addresses the symptoms of the materialistic self-satisfying disease of affluenza. First as a feeling unfulfillment and I discontent which is a result from efforts to keep up with the Jones’s. Second as an epidemic of stress, waste, overwork, and indebt ness caused by dogged pursuit of the American Dream. Thirdly, Affluenza is described as an unsustainable addiction of economic growth. The effects of this disease have a direct impact on our families, other countries, and the environment. (more…)

“A Farewell to Arms” Essay

“A Farewell to Arms: Conlict of Two Desires”
In A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway creates a character referred to as Lieutenant Frederic Henry, who is subject to a painful internal conflict throughout the book. He is pulled in one direction by his desire for the beautiful English nurse’s aide named Catherine Barkley and a completely different direction by his obligation to fulfill his duties as an ambulance driver serving in the Italian army during World War I. This conflict eventually comes to be the essence and core of the story.

The mutual love between Henry and Catherine begins as just a playful game of seduction, exchanging feigned plans for the future and almost numb kisses. However, it eventually grows to a point of passion, although it may be a subconscious illusion on both of their parts, where he does not want to be without her for the long stretches of time that he spends at war. Lieutenant Henry is wounded on the battlefield and sent to the hospital to have a necessary knee operation and then recuperate. (more…)

A Separate Peace Essay

World War II was a period of violence across globe, and many works of literature of the time reflect this. While works such as All Quite on the Western Front and The Soldier Spies focus on the violence of the war itself, other novels of the period are more about the home life during the war, and have little to do with the hostility in the war. And, while violence does exist in the book A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the scenes contribute to the overall meaning and themes of the story.

There are three essential scenes of violence in the story, each of which helps to emphasize the growth of the main character Gene Forrester throughout his life at Devon school, a school very similar to one Phillips Exeter Academy that Knowles attended as a youth. (more…)

Essay on Alienation

In all of the pictures and stories and the movie we were exposed to in this unit alienation was the key to making them impact the way that they made you think. Especially in “Do the Right Thing” the alienation was ever present. Alienation shapes the way we live, think, and exist as human beings.

In all of the stories we read, the main character or idea was impacted greatly by the alienation that they faced. The one that stuck with me the most was “Mending Wall” by Robert Frost. When I was reading about how his neighbor used a wall to alienate himself from the people surrounding him I couldn’t believe that he would actually like it. Especially when he said, “a good wall makes a good neighbor”. I thought about that statement for a long time trying to figure out what he was thinking about. It occurred to me that he just didn’t agree with things being blown or tossed into his yard by the people surrounding him, but ten I thought a little bit deeper into the issue. I thought about his mindset and what could posses him to create such a barrier. Then I thought that maybe in the area of the world that he was living in, solitude was part of the upside. (more…)

Essay on Life

I grew up in a family that I can say is very ideal. I have a father that is supportive and hardworking, a mother that is loving and caring, a brother who unfortunately died of heart attack last 1996 who was kind and generous and two sisters that are extremely sweet and thoughtful. Well, you might ask me what else can I ask for? I would understand if that thought would enter your mind because I believe most of the people I knew if not everybody would want to be in the position where I stand right now. But I guess you would also agree with me if I say that there are things that keep people on asking for more. Some ask for money, some ask for power, some ask for knowledge, some ask for love life, some ask for sex and whether we admit it or not there are these people who even ask for “life” per se. (more…)

Robin Hood Essay

Robin Hood Essay example:
Is it fair to take hard earned money from our school? My parents go to work everyday trying to raise money to support my family. A significant amount of that money goes to my school and is given for the provision of my education. Through the thieving ideas of Robin Hood, money has been taken from my school and changed our athletic program, transportation services, and educational opportunities.

Robin Hood has affected our school’s athletic program tremendously. Several things have been taken away from us that have always been apart of our school’s tradition. The first and most surprising was the loss of our letter jackets. Every since Carroll’s beginning, they have given every athlete a letter jacket. Now, each jacket has to be purchased by the individual person. Letter jackets are supposed to be a privilege earned, not bought, by a student who has worked to make varsity. Robin Hood has also made Carroll’s athletes pay to play. It costs one hundred dollars to participate in sports. I know of several people who have quit because of the outrageous costs. Athletes work hard to make the school’s reputation commendable. They should not have to take the financial burden given by the Robin Hood program. (more…)

Brave New World Essay

In his book Brave New World, Aldous Huxley subtly expresses his opinion on the thought of a Utopian world and the imperfection of humanity that would make such a paradise impossible to create. Through the characters of the novel Huxley explores this flawed utopia noting the cracks in the structure of the ‘World State’ when something if out of order, or not acting as it should be. This is a world who’s overall stability depends on it’s billion strong population to be blissful in their ignorance and emotional suppression. Therefore, if an individual chooses to seek the truth of the world, to seek love, to search for knowledge then the system begins to crumble.

In the world of Huxley mankind as it is today is completely gone. No longer are babies born, now they are created in laboratories. First their job along with their life is planned depending on what class they are to be. The Alpha and Beta classes are the genetic peak of this hierarchy followed by the Gamma’s all the way to the peasant class of Epsilon, the semi-moronic class that is designed for all the mediocre tasks. The way that the classes are separated from one another is the amount of alcohol that each group is dosed in as a fertilized egg. In this way the intelligence of each baby is altered. The abilities, and the potential of these individuals have now been utterly crushed leaving them with nothing other then to do what they are made too. (more…)
