Frank Lloyd Wright an outstanding architect in the history of this country. He built some of the country’s most outstanding pieces of architecture. Today people still see his work and are amazed by the outstanding work. Some people may not consider him one of the greatest architects, but he was one of the greatest architects that lived.
The famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, was born in the Richland Center, Wisconsin on June 8, 1867. His father, William Carey Wright, was a Baptist Minister and music teacher. His mother, Anna Lloyd Jones Wright, made comments of her son becoming an architect and it was her destiny to make him one.
Frank attended college at the University of Wisconsin in 1884. His mind was already set to be an architect. Although there were no fields for architecture at the university, he remained for a while and took engineering classes. This is where he got some architectural experience from doing construction on the college. In 1887 Wright left the university and went to Chicago where he designed his own building while working for Joseph Lyman Silsbee. Later in 1887 he left Joseph and would become a designer for the firm of Adler and Sullivan. Wright became their chief draftsman. Sullivan loved Wright’s work. But in 1893 Wright left the firm and made his own office in Chicago.
Wright’s first constructions were homes. Frank would make the house appear to be as if it had been part of the earth forever, as it were grown from the ground. Wright would use objects to add on to the house, which made it fit its natural environment. This is something that he was great at.
Frank built a lot of houses in and around Chicago around the 1900′s. The Willits House, shaped like a cross, was beautiful. The interior design was marvelous. He would make it look like every room was part of each other. He made each room in a house different, but if you were walking through one of his houses, each room would be related to the other. Every room would be related to the room, which you were in before.
A German publishing firm began to draw up designs and pictures in 1910. They released a second book in 1911. The Europeans were impressed from these books witch demonstrated Wright’s work and they were amazed by Wright’s multiple use of cubic shapes.
In the 1920′s Wright built many houses in South California. He also designed the Imperial Hotel Complex in Tokyo. The hotel was designed to survive earthquakes that happened often in Japan. The hotel was one of the few buildings that survived the monstrous earthquake that attacked Tokyo in 1923.
In 1932, Wright built a Taliesin Fellowship. The fellowship was made for students who wanted to work and live with Wright. In the winter the students would work on Wright’s home, Taliesin West, in Scottsdale Arizona. In the summer the students would work on Taliesin; Wright’s home in Wisconsin.
Wright had great work in the 1930′s, as well as he did his whole life. But the 1930′s seemed extra special. This is the year that he built the all famous Falling Waterhouse. “This house was one of the greatest houses I had ever seen in my life” said by Jane Garza. This house is real unique because it has a waterfall running through the middle of the house. This house demonstrated the way in which Frank loved to mix in the house with its natural surroundings. This beautiful house is one of his better designs of a house that Wright has done. The interior of this house is remarkable. The stone floor matches well with the wall and the decorations on the walls. This is one of the favorites that people love.
Frank also designed the Johnson Wax Company. The Johnson Wax Company had an interior of curved glass and brick. This build expressed the streamlined style which automobiles are made. Later a laboratory was added to the Building.
Towards the end of Frank’s life, he designed two of his greatest pieces of art. One was the Guggenheim Museum, which was built in New York City in 1960. “I visited this museum and I would have to say that the museum was the greatest museum I had ever visited” said by Randy Miller. The inside of the building is unique. There is a ramp that goes all the way to the top in a spiral way, much like the way the shopping mall is in San Antonio. This is a beautiful Museum.
The other beauty that Frank designed was the Marin County Civic Center. This was built in California. The finishing touches are expected to be complete in the year 2000. The civic center is a series of long structures that are supposed to connect three hills together.
Wright never was able to see the completion of the Guggenheim Museum. Wright had surgery for intestinal blockage on April 4, 1959. Frank was already recovering when things took a sharp turn for the worst. On April 9, 1959 he had past away. His body was returned to Spring Green where it was be laid to rest in the family burial ground at Taliesin. On April 12 Frank Lloyd Wright, the worlds greatest architect was laid to rest near his mother and Mamah Borthwick Cheney.
Frank Lloyd Wright was a great man. He built some of the worlds greatest pieces of art. The remarkable things that he accomplished speak for themselves. There are the reasons why people look up to him and why people think he is the greatest architect that lived. The beautiful things that he built are outstanding and inspirational. Frank Lloyd Wright is the greatest architect that ever lived.
