Amistad Essay

In the 1997 movie Amistad, Steven Spielberg illustrates the events that took place in 1839 on the Spanish ship, The Amistad (La Amistad). The movie travels through the events with vivid and powerful emotion. The slaves, even though they could not speak English, undoubtedly demonstrated their intense longing for freedom in Spielberg’s version of the historical event.

The setting of Amistad proved to be frequently accurate. The backdrop of the movie was unfailing to the period in which it occurred . There are a few mistakes, though, that went unseen in the making of the film. The American flag that swayed proudly throughout the film carried too many stars. It is the present day American flag that the viewer notices waving through the air, while the flag should have contained less stars. Not all of the states that construct the U.S. had been added to the flag in the early 1800s. Another inconsistency with the environment around the movie took place during the scene with John Quincy Adams standing outside the Capitol building talking with Theodore Jeadson. (more…)

Essay on War

As a class full of college history students when they think WWII began and a plethora of answers should be expected. Ask a class full of high school history students the same question and expect an even broader response World War II is usually dated by historians to have begun on Sept. 1, 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. Era 8 in Bring History Alive covers the Great Depression to WWII. As with most presentations on history, it is hard to present detailed accounts of causes and consequences of particular historical events. It is necessary, therefore, to dissect particular events into smaller events, easier to study. I chose to study the early phases and causes of WWII in an attempt to present this subject in my future classroom. This specific presentation can be broken down into 9-10 lecture days with a last day of movie viewing. The days of lecture can be divided into the following topics: The world after WWI, and specifically the U.S. and the Great Depression, an introduction to the causes of the war, the failure of peace efforts, the rise of fascism and the formation of the Axis Coalition, and the German aggression and ambition in Europe. Though many people may have many other opinionated factors, these are the ones I have chosen to focus on. (more…)

Essay on Life

I grew up in a family that I can say is very ideal. I have a father that is supportive and hardworking, a mother that is loving and caring, a brother who unfortunately died of heart attack last 1996 who was kind and generous and two sisters that are extremely sweet and thoughtful. Well, you might ask me what else can I ask for? I would understand if that thought would enter your mind because I believe most of the people I knew if not everybody would want to be in the position where I stand right now. But I guess you would also agree with me if I say that there are things that keep people on asking for more. Some ask for money, some ask for power, some ask for knowledge, some ask for love life, some ask for sex and whether we admit it or not there are these people who even ask for “life” per se. (more…)

Essay on Friendship

Friendship is a ‘slippery notion’. This is the definition of the friendship that Garry Disher sets against the background of the war. Hart is grappling between the loss of friendship and the betrayal of friendship. His life circle only deals with the jealousy, racial differences, darkness of love and prejudice. He seems to take all of these to be formed a friendship. Can this friendship be made to endure? He blindly forgets all of the contents that can make the friendship endure. Even his relationship with Mitsy, he also does not know how to maintain both relationship as friend and as lover. Hart’s jealousy toward Jamie Killian is the cause of their difficult relationship because Hart only see Jamie as a rival for Mitsy’s love. According to Garry Disher’s thoughts, Hart only fully learns about the importance of friendship after he has experienced though problems connected with the war. For example, he is disloyal to some of his friends and the war results in the death of his mother and the ill health of his father. (more…)

Essay on India

In any country’s history, a high stage of social development is reached only when the main social divisions are formed. “The caste system penetrates the Hindu society to a level unknown elsewhere. It plays some part in other civilizations but in India it has invaded the whole. It is in this sense that we may speak of the caste system as a phenomenon peculiar to India” (Pocock 27). The class system of the United States and the caste system of India share common characteristics but, at the same time, they different in many ways. A caste system rigidly restricted occupationally, socially, members may not marry outside the caste. Caste system devalues and discriminates people according to their genetic and/or social background. There are said to be four major traits typical of caste systems. Included are the following: membership into the caste is hereditary; marriage within the caste is mandatory; mobility is nearly impossible; occupation is strongly related to caste (Hurst, 1998). Conversely, a class system is a society based upon different groups. (more…)

Essay on Patriotism

Patriotism is a feeling that is quite difficult to explain. Pride is among the most common ways to describe patriotism. Many Americans are very patriotic and will do whatever is needed to continue the growth and success of their nation. On September 11, 2001, Americans were surprised by a terrorist attack, but quickly set aside meager differences to band together and support their homeland. After the wake of this enormous attack, preparations were made to try to prevent terrorism from ever happening again. The media allowed everyone around the country to know what was happening and how they could help. With each citizen doing a small part, the country soon rose back to its feet and resumed its leading position. (more…)

Ageism Essay

Most people don’t really know a lot about the aspect of aging and its effects on people or in our society theses days. When asked who is growing old? We all are! (Barrow, Smith 3). A lot of people might not believe that but in many minds, growing old, like death only happens to others and it happens to individuals older than us. Medical science and technology are extending life expectancy so that we may all experience long lives, but what would be the quality of our lives? Some old people live in isolation in one room of a slum hotel cooking on a hot plate. Others live in inferior board and care homes dependent on poorly paid attendants to meet their needs (Barrow, Smith 3). On the other hand, many aged enjoy happy lives surrounded by friends and activities. For some people aging may result in self-realization, but for others it may bring despair. We can have more control over the changes aging brings if we are aware of its certainty and how it has been treated and accepted into our society. Furthermore, we need to know about those factors in ourselves and in our environment that can make aging difficult.

Essay on Architecture

What a sad sight to see: a young boy in the house with nothing to do. After complaining of boredom, his mom urges him to do something out of the house for once. She raids his bedroom closet, unravels the pile of dirty clothes, and finds a glistening package with the words “Do Dad Sketch Pad” through the translucent plastic wrapping. It looked familiar to her, then she snapped her fingers and remembered exactly where it came from. It was the art set that she had bought for him for his tenth birthday. Now boredom could no longer be an excuse for the young boy. Proudly and swiftly, his mom drug him across the house by the ear and gave him a push out the front door while slapping the sketchpad and charcoal into his chest. (more…)
