Executive Summary
With such a rapid moving economy, a shortage of qualified workers, and plentiful business opportunities, the topic of motivating employees has become extremely important to the employer, as motivation has a great impact on the way employees perform in an organisation. If employees do not enjoy their work, it will affect the success of the organization’s goals. As an internal drive to satisfy unsatisfied needs, motivation can direct individuals’ behavior to satisfy those needs. Hence, the employer must understand what employees need and how to achieve those needs.

To be effective, the employer needs to understand what motivates employees within the context of the roles they perform. Different people are motivated by different factors because individuals differ in the level of their needs. Some employees may want more income but others may require a more interesting and challenging job. In today’s world, it seems that money has become less of a motivator. The employee’s request is more than just good wages. They now do require some benefit and flexibility to bring their work and personal life together. A good working relationship with colleagues, as well as the opportunity for growth is a must. It becomes the employer’s responsibility to involve employees in the business and let them know that the employer appreciates their ideas and suggestions. (more…)

Clinical Perspective
Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.TB.) and is the leading cause of death in the world from a single infectious disease. Although very little is known of the mechanisms of it pathogenesis and how to protect a person from the disease. There was a decline in TB in the United States in the last century but the disease is now increasing and there are now multiple drug resistant strains that have emerged. This increase has multiple causes some of which are changes in social structure in cities, HIV epidemic, and a failure by some public entities to improve their public health programs.

In 2002 M. TB. is responsible for more morbidity in humans than any other bacterial disease. M.TB. infects 1.7 billion people per year which is equal to 33% of the entire world population and is responsible for over 3 million deaths/year. (Todar’s 2002)

In the United States since 1985 there has been an increase in cases of M.TB. this is due largely to the increase of Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections which occurred during the same period of time. More recently there has also been an increase in the number of cases of multi drug resistant (MDR) strains of M.TB. due to patient non compliance with medication. (more…)

Frida Kahlo Essay

Born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo in 1907 and died 1954. To try and separate her life from her work would be extremely difficult. She lived with severe disabilities throughout her relatively short life and we can see her progression through her paintings, which were always direct and powerful. “I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality”. During my readings about her life one never gets the sense that she felt bitter about the hand that was dealt her but rather that she accepted it and got on with life.

Frida’s mother was a native Mexican of Spanish and Indian descent and her father a Hungarian-German Jewish immigrant. Kahlo was the third of four daughters- Matilde, Adriana and the youngest sister Cristina.

Frida was born in a time of change. Three years after her birth the Mexican revolution began and shortly after, WW1 would change the face of Europe. All these events influenced her art but in addition to these external influences was also the intense and personal introspection that was a characteristic of her work.

In 1913 at the age of six, she contracted polio, which affected her right leg. She grew close to her father at this time who helped her build up the strength in her leg. Her father always felt Frida was the most intellectual of his daughters and although he was remote from the rest of his family always found time for her. Kahlo had a different relationship with her mother, whom she called “the boss”. (more…)

Martin Luther King Essay

Martin Luther King sample essay:
The civil rights of African-American’s in the 1950’s and 1960’s were in the process of being changed forever. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was at the head of the march for African-American civil rights. One such example, Dr. King writes a letter while in jail explaining the actions taken in Birmingham, Alabama in early April of 1963. This letter has been published in the book “The Presence of Others: Voices and Images That Call for Response.” In the letter, Dr. King uses three appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos) effectively to illustrate the actions taken leading up to his arrest in Birmingham. This letter discusses Dr. King’s views on what was happening in the Civil Rights Movement and why it happened.

Dr. King begins his letter in an interesting way, by stating that he normally does not write about criticisms of his work and ideas, but that he feels the men that made the statements are good willed people, he will try and answer their statements. (Page 142). He probably started off this way because he was trying to capture the intended audience’s attention to let them know that he was in fact going to explain his ideas and actions. King also lets the audience know that he is still in jail, and that he just happened to come across the statements. After the first paragraph, he immediately begins to explain his purpose and reasoning for the actions using very effective ethos and logos. (more…)

John Steinbeck was born February 27, 1902, in Salinas, California. His parents, Olive and John Ernst Steinbeck were of Irish and German ancestry. John’s father served as the Monterey County treasurer, and his mother was a former school teacher.

John lived in a farm-like environment with many small ranches and canneries, with his two older sisters Esther and Elizabeth, and Mary, the youngest child. As she raised John, Olive would sometimes try to get John to achieve more than he did. She taught John to read at an early age. He enjoyed such books as Robin Hood, Treasure Island, and The Legends of King Arthur. In one of his favorite books he scribbled that he wanted to become a writer.

When John entered high school, he became junior officer of the Student Training Corps. He organized drills and rifle practices. His teachers encouraged him to develop his writing skills, and he even submitted a few stories for publication before graduation from high school. He had a successful high school career but when he enrolled in Leland Stanford Junior University, he failed several courses, and completed only three courses the first year.

In the summer of 1923, he and his sister enrolled in a marine biology course at a research facility. He enjoyed the scientific work and potentially could have become a biologist, but decided that literature was better for him. He returned to Stanford and finished the semester. Then John decided to work along with his friend Dook, at Pacific Grove, in the Spreckles factory for twelve hour shifts. They had a hard time and barely earned enough money for their trip back to Salinas. He again enrolled for a final semester at Stanford in 1925, but he never received a college degree because of his devotion to writing. (more…)
