Materialism Essay

Materialism involves the importance one attaches to their worldly possessions. For a materialist, possessions are central to his or her life in that he or she feels that increased “consumption” increases his or her satisfaction with life. Materialism may become a problem in situations where the physical goal of consumption overshadows all other goals of self and development. This does not imply that all material desires are bad. In fact, the acquisition of material possessions may begin to interfere with other important aspects of life. At that point, materialism is likely to become harmful to the person or to society. What is the relationship of materialism to individuals’ ethical beliefs? Do consumers who are more materialistic have different ethical standards than those who are not? On one hand materialism may increase a society’s economic wealth and material possessions. On the other hand, there are those who would argue that materialism has a negative overall effect on the quality of life. Possessions can be the focus of one’s life, becoming more important than religion, friends, and achievements. In making possessions the majority component for achieving happiness, the more materialistic person might be willing to bend ethical rules to gain possessions. (more…)

Physician Assisted Suicide Essay

Physician assisted suicide is a rapidly growing concern that is troubling the lawmakers of our country. Physician assisted suicide is currently illegal in the United States of America in every state except Oregon where it has been legalized under certain circumstances. There have been many challenges concerning the constitutionality of the ban on physician assisted suicide. Physician assisted suicide should remain illegal because it murders innocent people and it violates the Hippocratic Oath.

“Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given to me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all I must not play god” (NOVA Online 1). This excerpt from the modern version of the Hippocratic Oath it specifically states, “I must not play god.” That is exactly what doctors are doing when they practice physician assisted suicide. They are picking who lives and who dies. (more…)

Essay on John Adams

John Adams, the first vice president under George Washington and the second President of the United States, accompanied the growing country through some of its most serious tribulations. He became the first President to live in the White House, and was also the first chief executive whose son also served as president. Adams played a major role in the adoption and in the signing of the historic document, The Declaration of Independence. Adams barely earned popularity during his long political career. He was not a cold-hearted man, but his bluntness, impatience, and vanity made him more enemies than friends. Also, his clumsiness in human relations often caused him to be misunderstood.

John Adams was born in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts, on October 30, 1735. His father, also John Adams, was a farmer, a deacon, and a militia officer. His mother, Susanna Boylston Adams, came from a prestige family of Brookline and Boston merchants and physicians. When Adams was young he helped with the chores on the farm, and studied hard in the village school. He didn’t like to read books in particular.

Adams graduated from Harvard College in 1755. He was ranked number fourteen in a class of twenty-four, based on social position, not intelligence. Adams was actually one of the best scholars in his class. After teaching schooling for a short period, Adams studied law with James Putnam in Worcester, Massachusetts. He moved to Boston ten years later, where he became a leading attorney of the Massachusetts colony.

In 1764, Adams married Abigail Smith (1744-1818), a minister’s daughter, in Weymouth, Massachusetts. John Quincy Adams, their oldest son, became the sixth President of the United States the year before his father died. (more…)

ADHD/ADD Research Paper

This study was conducted by Russell A. Barkley, PhD, Kevin R. Murphy, PhD, and Denise Kwasnik, MA. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the motor vehicle caving knowledge, skills, and negative caving outcomes of older teens and young adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. (ADHD).

The subjects were a total of 25 young adults with ADHD and 23 young adults without ADHD 17-30 years of age(22.5 average age) drawn from the community and equated in gender, culture and educational level.
The methods that were used were structured interviews, behavior ratings by self and others, video test of driving knowledge; computer simulated driving test, and official motor vehicle records. Dependent measures were self reported driving history, official state driving record, and an elemental driving system which simulates driving using an IBM compatible software program, computer, personal console, steering wheel and directional signals which used to present high pressure real world driving scenarios from the viewpoint of the driver. The test assesses decision-making strategies while driving. The software provided a number of different scores for each trial and across the three trials.

The eight scores that were measured included traffic /speeding violations, drunk driving, license suspensions, and crashes as a driver, along with number of crashes. (more…)

Euthanasia Research Paper

The euthanasia movement was upset in 2002 when Nancy Crick, a supporter of active euthanasia, committing suicide by swallowing a fatal dose of medication. At the age of 69, Ms. Crick was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Several friends and family members, who accompanied her at the time of her death, were devastated to learn that the autopsy showed no evidence of new cancer that would have caused her “terminal” death. With this news, the physicians with the Australian Medical Association reconfirmed their standing against active euthanasia (Steel 32).

Human life is sacred and no one should have the right to take that life, therefore active euthanasia, or assisted suicide, should remain illegal. Death should come naturally, with medications as needed to control pain and suffering, but without assisted suicide. Others feel that active euthanasia is the answer and try to promote this as the “dignified death.”

Controversy over euthanasia creates a problem because people are exhausting valuable time, energy, and resources on trying to legalize euthanasia when the existing laws are already adequate. Euthanasia is the term most people associate with helping someone commit suicide, yet this assisted suicide, or mercy killing, is more accurately defined as “active euthanasia.” (more…)

Prostitution Essay

I’ve paid for sex. I’ve traded expensive dinners for sex. I’ve sprung for nights on the town for sex. I’ve given gifts for sex. I even once wrote a term paper for sex (she got an “A” and I had a fine time, so I’d call that a fair exchange). But had I ever just coughed up cold hard cash for sex, I would have tripped over a legal line that violates the law in most U.S. jurisdictions. It’s ridiculous that the U.S. regulates this victimless crime. The reasons why prostitution remains illegal in so many places generally boils down to two arguments: Prostitution sets the wrong tone for society, and it degrades the people who peddle the favors.

The first argument can be described as the “conservative” one, and it is held by folks who despise sex outside of marriage. They see commercial sex as a threat to the institution of marriage, which is supposed to be the backbone of society — a conservative society, of course. The second argument is the “liberal” one, and is usually intended to apply only to women, not men, who solicit their favors on the open market. (more…)

Existentialism Research Paper

It is certainly true that the emergence of existentialism and its later idea of embodiment at mid nineteenth century have played a key role in shaping people’s view of how they look at themselves in the world. While previous philosophers focus on using systematic and logical way to search for the meaning of truth, for instance, Descartes believed that “cogito, ergo sum?(“I think, therefore I am?, more and more people have come to feel that philosophical idea has been pushing the human being into a more and more peripheral position in its perspectives (Kaplan 1962: 114). Conversely, existentialism has provided us a kind of philosophy that centred on the individual and his or her relationship to the universe or God. Thinkers in existentialism asserted that philosophy should not be a set of propositions but a way of life. Nevertheless, the diversity and complexity of the ideas among existentialists are acknowledged (Mounier 1948:2; Breisach 1962, 4; Kaplan 1962:116; Roubiczek 1964:10; Solomon 1987:x). Hence, in this essay, I am going to examine only some of the existential themes that are common amid philosophers and authors. (more…)

Research Paper on Carl Rogers

There have been several different personality theories, which have adopted a phenomenological approach ranging from the humanistic theory outlined by Carl Rogers to the existentialism of R D Laing. They all share the idea that as phenomenological understanding of the person and their situation is essential to the understanding of that individual’s personality. Rogers attempts to present his statement of personality dynamics and behaviour by putting together the theoretical formulation, which were explicit or implicit in his theory and the effects upon personality. Personality refers to an organisation of more or less permanent qualities that charactise an individual. Rogers developed his theory of personality as a result of clinical work. He emphased the importance of self concept and personal growth. He argues that all human human beings have two basic needs. Firstly to self actualise otherwise psychological problems will occure. Secondly to recognise and obtain positive regard, affection, love and respect from other people irrespective of that individuals good or bad behaviour. This provides the individual with security and then they are free to discover their potential by exploring the world and their relationships. (more…)

Marie Antoinette Essay

A royal female child of the eighteenth century had only two things to accomplish. The first was to ensure her parents throne by going along with an arranged marriage to a foreign royal. The second was to have a son to ensure the unity of the two families futures. Maria Antonia, later known as Marie Antoinette, was born Archduchess of Austria. She was born in 1755 and died 1793. Growing up Antonia’s life in Austria was pretty formal behind the scenes. Her parents were one of the few who actually married for love. So this already placed high expectations of marriage in her young mind. She saw how well her parents ruled and got along together. Antonia’s childhood came to an end quickly, at the age of 14, when her mother arranged for her to marry Louis XVI. This marriage represented the alliance between Austria and France.

In 1770 Maria was on her way to meet her soon-to-be husband. The two were married on neutral ground. Maria and Louis had a similar idea of the marriage. Both of them would rather not, but knew it was necessary because of the responsibilities they were born with. Once married Marie went from the name Maria Antonia to Marie Antoinette. At first glance both of them had distinct first impressions of each other. “Louis was impressed with the petite, blonde, pretty woman. He was very nervous and her innocence and friendliness helped him to relax.” “Marie gazed at the heavy and gawky youth and took pity on him. (more…)

School Uniform Essay

Should we wear schools uniforms? School uniforms are to show that schools have disciplined and smart kids. It shows it’s a respected and great school for kids to go. But others opinions are there is no real point to uniforms. They are a waste of money; you could be spending it on descent clothes that you would like to wear. Many people have different opinions on both positive and negative sides. This informative writing piece shows what school kids really think of school uniforms. The kid’s opinions are stuck in between the positive and negative sides.

One of the most popular reasons is that people think they are a good idea because they don’t wear casual clothes. This greatly decreases bullying in the schools. Most kids would be wearing the trendy cloths that are “cool” but if a kid wears something completely opposite, the “cool” kids would have to give him a bad time about it. If uniforms are worn, this is completely preventable.

It would reduce the cost of buying expensive casual clothes. Uniforms would be much more cheaper than casual clothes. Kids would want to get all the top brands that would cost a fortune for the parent, while uniforms are greatly cheaper and you only need a few shirts and pants for the whole year. Most of the time kids get bored of their clothes and want new ones, or the brand isn’t cool anymore. That doesn’t matter with school uniforms. (more…)
