Celebral Palsy Research Paper

Cerebral palsy is a condition that affects between 500,000 – 700,000 Americans. Every year about 3,000 babies are born with this disorder and another 500 or so acquire it in their early years of life. What this means for teachers is that we can and/or will be faced with this physical disability in the classroom. Cerebral palsy by definition is a condition caused by damage to the brain, usually occurring before, during or shortly after birth. This disorder is neither curable, progressive nor communicable and can range from mild to severe depending on the child. It is characterized by an inability to fully control motor function, depending upon which part of the brain has been damaged. This can lead to problems in the central nervous system that can cause spasms, involuntary movements, mobility, seizures, abnormal sensations and perceptions, impairment of sight, hearing or speech and mental retardation. This is where, we as teachers, will encounter the use of IEP’s. With early identification and intervention, persons with this disorder can usually begin formal schooling and live fairly normal lives. 1984 Essay

All human history, thought and action has what Nietzsche describes as ‘the will to power’ at its core. An individual’s desires are best explained within the context of power, as their realization more often than not necessitate the exclusion of other’s desires. This can be seen in George Orwell’s novel 1984, in which he uses a fictional totalitarian Government (modeled on the USSR, Nazi Germany and to a lesser extent the Medieval Catholic Church) to give an exaggerated account of how individuals and regimes use misinformation and fear to gain power over people’s words, thoughts, actions and labours. The manifestations of man’s quest for power are evident in all levels of relationships. People seek power in their communities, in their families, in their peer groups, relationships and institutions. From mass revolts to domestic violence, mankind is intoxicated with the idea of gaining personal power. (more…)

Poetry Essay

For years women have been labelled by the vast population of men as parental beings fit only for the home and customary sorts of past times such as sowing and cooking. This dominant discourse of being a woman has altered in response to society’s adaptations over time. Poetry in the past and in today’s world has allowed not only women but also men to convey their own values and beliefs as to a womanТs role and place in society. Three poems have been selected to expose a dominant, alternative and oppositional view of the female identity. Indisputably, these poems have arisen many hidden meanings and ideas according to the text and discourses apparent in each poem, which will be further discussed. (more…)

Physical Education Essay

Regular physical activity is associated with a healthier, longer life style, and with a lower` risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and most of all obesity. Despite all the benefits of physical activity, most school-aged children in this country are inactive. Lack of physical activity has also contributed to a sharp increase in childhood obesity in the last decade. Given the fact that regular physical activity will help younger people stay healthier, and is an essential component of childhood development, it is important that this be included as part of the regular school curriculum. Philip Larkin Essay

Philip Arthur Larkin was born August 9, 1922 in Coventry England. He attended Saint John’s College, Oxford and graduated with honors in 1943. His first published book of poetry was entitled “The North Ship,” and released in 1945. Although this book is not considered to be some of his best works in some passages we see glimpses foreshadowing his later more mature style, which showed up in full force with his next volume of poetry called “The Less Deceived,” published in 1946. This change was accounted to the introduction of Larkin to the poetry of Thomas Hardy who there after became a strong influence in his works from that point on. With this second publishing Larkin became a mar key poet of his generation spearheading a splinter group of poets in what he called “The Movement.” This was a group of English writers who were disenchanted with the current scene of neo-Romantic writings like that of Yeats and Dylan Thomas. Along with being a respected poet Larkin was also a great fan and critic of American Jazz. His poetry is said to be searing, often mocking, with flagrant wit showing his dark vision of the three universal themes of mortality, love, and human solitude. I feel the two poems I have chosen exemplify some of these traits quit nicely. (more…)

Ozymandias Essay

The poem Ozymandias by Percy Bysshe Shelley is about a traveler telling the speaker about a statue in the desert. This statue is half sunk in the sand and the traveler explains that the “sneer of cold command” (1720, 5) on the statue’s face indicates that the sculptor understood the passions of the statue’s subject. This man sneered at those who were not as powerful as him, but he fed his people because of something in his heart. The Traveler goes on to say that on the pedestal of the statue, it is written, “My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!” (1720,10-11) But when you look all around the statue for these “works” there is nothing but sand and a bare desert. One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest Essay

It is very evident in the novel “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” that every character had his place in the story, this, although seemingly ignorable has proven to be a very useful way in relaying a message. The background characters of the story tell more than just the obvious. Many backgrounds and background characters go unnoticed in many stories and movies, but without these elements many themes or messages could not be relayed as clearly. In many movies even the light fixture can prove to show a message or even assist in predicting future events, this I believe was used to relay an extremely unnoticed theme and message in the novel. I believe one background theme is, that the writer Ken Kessey used background characters to show the truth of the ward, not the characters that knew what was going on, or so they believed, but that the nurse will come to use these characters to her own advantage.
