In our society, there are many cases where we have to punish the criminal so that they would learn their lesson and stop committing crimes. There are many different ways of punishing the criminals and one of them would be the death penalty. The issue of death penalty has been going on ever since the early days. Some people support the idea of death penalty for they say it is fair for one to be killed if they kill others. There are others who feel that death penalty is not fair and many innocents have been penalized for something that they did not do. The issue of death penalty is unjust and it deals with our moral issues. It is a cruel punishment and we should be able to come up with another punishment in replace of it. Prejudice is present in cases involving the death penalty. We should abolish the death penalty from society.

There are many cases of death penalty when an innocent suspect is being sentence to death. It is unfair to the innocent people and to their family to have them executed for something they did not do. If the Courts of Justice were to misjudge a person and claim them to be guilty, they cannot fix their mistake once that innocent person is killed. Executing an innocent is just as wrongful as any individual who kills a person out in public. It would also be considered murder if the jury kills an innocent, so does that mean we should also kill the jury? That is ridiculous to have everyone just killing each other, and the issue would not get any better, but more killing gets involved. “Amid the sufferings of life on earth, suicide is God’s best gift to man.” Such was written within the first published encyclopedia, Natural History, by Gaius Plinius Secundus in AD 77 (Smithsonian 1). Clearly, suicide has intrigued many throughout the history of the human race. It has been and continues to be one of the most disputed topics within the philosophical and religious studies. For example, the question as to whether or not suicide is a sin has caused much-heated debate between those of the Catholic faith, as well as clergy. The Bible is essentially the law for the religion, and yet it is so incredibly ambiguous that it leads to many interpretations. Not only can this argument over the deceased’s fate be found in real life, but it is also a frequent topic in literature. My Antonia by Willa Cather devoted a lot of time on the subject, revolving around the patriarch of a Bohemian household, Mr. Shimerda (Cather). His suicide and his reasons for killing himself are also equivocal, and it is essential to dissect them in order to figure out whether or not, according to Catholicism, Mr. Shimerda would have committed a grave sin and be put into Purgatory or even Hell. While Descartes liked to sit in front of a fireplace to think since he was a “thinking thing,” Nietzsche would tell him to get off his lazy butt and live. To Nietzsche there was no such thing as a systematic way of proving things, so there is no reason to sit down and do such a thing all day long. Nietzsche believed there were many truths. Romeo and Juliet Essay

Romeo and Juliet is one on the most famous love tragedies in the world. The tragedy is set in Verona, a town in northern Italy, capital of Verona Province. The play was written in 1595 by William Shakespeare and we assume that the tragedy was based around the same century as the century Shakespeare wrote it. From this we know that women in those time had no choice of their husbands and usually the father selected the husband who would provide the best dowry. Also courtly love was a fashionable idea at that time and it is evident in RomeoТs case. In addition it was accepted that individuals married at a young age (12- 15 years old)

The play opens with the servants of the two rival houses, the Montagues and the Capulets, in a dispute on a Sunday morning. Then heartbroken and mourning Romeo appears. He groans about his beloved Rosaline and the way she does not return his love. Shortly afterwards Romeo and his friends decide to go to a party hosted by Capulet, so that Romeo will realize that there are many other girls prettier than Rosaline. Written in the 8th century when society was in the process of converting from Paganism to Christianity, the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf is believed to be the “lone survivor of a genre of Old English long epics” (Norton 29). Although the author of Beowulf is unknown, “it is now widely believed that Beowulf is the work of a single poet who was a Christian and that his poem reflects well-established Christian tradition” (Norton 29). Some scholars also believed that epic was originally written as pagan folklore but “it eventually was expanded to include Christian elements” (Smith par.3). In the final battle between Beowulf and the dragon, as well as throughout the entire epic, there are various parallels between pagan beliefs, “drawing on pagan epic tradition for kings, heroes, and monsters while drawing on new Christian beliefs to present these characters as noble, in possession of the natural knowledge of God, willing to battle his enemies on earth, and therefore capable of redemption” (Smith par. 2).

“Now I am old but as king of the people I shall pursue this fight for the glory of winning” (Norton 86). Beowulf is the ideal hero – strong, courageous, honorable, and chivalrous. He vows to protect his people for his own glory and status in society. He is also blessed with superhuman strength, another pagan characteristic. In a sense, this misguided notion is true- but climate change is much more than “yuppies driving SUVs.” It is industry freely burning fossil fuels to make a profit, and about the fact that every person on the earth requires energy, a clean source for which does not yet exist, or has not been implemented because of the tight grip governments and corporations hold on their stake in energy (fossil fuels), on which they know every person is dependant.

Nine of the eleven hottest years in the 20th century have occurred since 1985, which is not consistent with a natural trend [Haines et al., 1998]. Glacier shrinkage is occurring at a much faster rate than can be explained by natural trends [Oerlermans, 1994]. Even when the heat effects of volcanoes and other misleading weather phenomena that would make the temperature of the earth seem higher than it actually is are taken out of consideration, studies show that the surface temperature of the earth has been increasing at a rate of 0.17 degrees Celsius per decade [Haines et al., 1998]. These figures are not consistent with a natural trend, and, when one considers the tens of thousands of years in which humans have inhabited the earth, and that humans have really only started burning fossil fuels heavily since the industrial revolution, and the fact that the world’s population is only going to increase, this number is dauntingly enormous. Obesity Essay

Obesity in children and adolescents is a serious issue with many health and social consequences that may often continue into adulthood. This paper studies the nature and causes of obesity in children. It will focus on the origins of obesity; how family eating patterns are a crucial factor and environmental and lifestyle; genetic inheritance; lifestyle and eating habits which all play an important part in childhood obesity. The long-term effects of obesity will be discussed and how we can prevent such illness.

Firstly, it is important to gain an understanding of what obesity is. According to Wlardlow (Journal of the Hela, 2000, vol. 7) obesity is defined as a condition characterised by excess body fat. It is also defined as being 20% above the average weight. Generally consumption of foods high in sugar and fats lead to obesity. Alcohol intake can also contribute to the condition due to its high sugar content. Obesity is a serious medical disease that affects 20%-25% of children and adolescents in Australia. It is the second leading cause of preventable death after smoking (Ross Fitzgerald, Courier Mail, Nov. 2000). According to research, we all have and need fat tissue in our bodies. (more…)

Understanding Autism and Intervention Strategies
The diagnosis of autism is one that can shatter a parent. There is a substantial amount of confusion and controversy found in all areas of the disorder, from diagnosis to treatment. Most parents who seek treatment for a youngster labeled with autism face many dead-ends and obstacles concerning what is best for their child. Asch-Goodkin & Ten (2001) have observed that many parents are willing to try any intervention they hear about, yet pediatricians are usually at a loss on giving information on what intervention strategies will actually work.

Research in the field of autism has been proven to be useful in characterizing the behavior of the autistic child, but very little is still known about the causes of the disorder. There is difficulty in early diagnosis of the disorder because the characteristics of autism are usually not detectable in children under two years old (Sigman & Capps, 1997). The Brown University Child and Adolescent Behavior Letter from July 2001 notes “there is currently no known definitive underlying cause of autism and, consequently, no universal treatment protocol, which makes the challenge of diagnosing and managing care for the disorder even more difficult.” Unfortunately, intervention in the autistic child may begin too late. There is still much research to be done on this disorder, yet with the growing prevalence of cases of autism it is expected that new research will aid in discovering some of these mysteries plaguing researchers. Cholesterol Essay
